MEP Alexander Bernhuber: «The intergroup on sustainable livestock farming integrates environmental, economic, and animal welfare aspects.»
After the interviews with MEP Benoit Cassart (RE, Belgium) about the importance of an Intergroup in the European Parliament focused on Sustainable Livestock, we speak today with a second MEP ready to co-chair this platform aiming to bring together MEPs to discuss the sector’s contributions to environmental, social, and economic sustainability: Alexander Bernhuber (EPP, Austria).
Why did you have the idea to create an Intergroup dedicated to sustainable livestock farming at the European Parliament?
The Intergroup was created to address the need for a holistic approach to sustainable livestock farming, integrating environmental, economic, and animal welfare aspects. The sector faces significant challenges, including climate change and consumer demand for sustainability, and this intergroup helps foster policies that balance these needs while supporting farmers.
Why do you think it is important to have this Intergroup now?
It is crucial now due to the EU’s Green Deal and Farm to Fork strategy, which pushes for sustainability, reduced emissions, and improved animal welfare. Farmers need now more than ever clear, actionable policies to navigate these demands while remaining competitive. The Intergroup provides a platform to develop these solutions.
What are the exact objectives of this Intergroup?
- Promote sustainability in livestock farming, focusing on reducing emissions and improving resource efficiency.
- Support animal welfare through higher ethical standards and better practices.
- Ensure economic viability by helping farmers adopt sustainable methods without losing profitability.
- Foster dialogue among stakeholders to share best practices and formulate actionable policies.
What are the differences between this Intergroup and the one focused on animal welfare and health?
While both intergroups address animal welfare, the sustainable livestock farming Intergroup focuses on the broader integration of sustainability (environmental, economic, and welfare aspects). In contrast, the animal welfare Intergroup focuses primarily on animal well-being and health policies.
